The Japanese Cultural Institute promotes Japanese-German cultural exchange and supports Japan-related events throughout Germany. It also promotes Japanese studies in the language and social sciences throughout the German-speaking world and carries out cooperative projects with local cultural and scientific organizations. It was established in 1969 by the Japanese government and is one of three cultural institutes of The Japan Foundation, along with Rome and Paris. Exhibitions, concerts, lecture series and film screenings as well as language courses are held here on a regular basis.

"Kyoto's Gardens Through the Seasons."

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the twinning of Cologne and Kyoto, the institute presents color photographs by Mizuno Katsuhiko, who has specialized in the city of Kyoto and its classical culture in his artistic work since 1969. The photographs impressively show the beauty and uniqueness of Kyoto's gardens in the change of the four seasons.
